Over the past six years, we've completed the world's largest, most thorough survey of functional strength for children ages 12 months through 11 years. Funded by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, this study is the first large-scale effort in the U.S. to quantify child strength since the ground-breaking work by our predecessors at UMTRI (then HSRI) in the 1970s. We've gathered data from more than 800 children using custom-designed laboratory fixtures and rigorously tested methods. The work is summarized in 7 technical reports submitted to CPSC. The first two reports, on whole-body strength measures for children less than 2 years and 2 through 5 years are available from CPSC. We will be publishing the results first as technical reports, then as journal articles, but our primary dissemination method will be through online data browsers that make the findings available to everyone. Much more to come on that!
